Q:

I am looking for something to soak up water on my clay based infield. (Brett)

A:

Pro's Choice offers a range of products that can help with moisture management for clay-based infields:

Pro's Choice Red is an infield conditioner that when incorporated into the soil creates passageways for drainage as well as aiding in solving compaction problems.

Pro's Choice Select is an infield conditioner that when used as a topdressing can aid in water management on the surface of your infield.

Rapid Dry is a fact-acting drying agent that will quickly wick away excess water to keep your field playing.

Q:

I have a pallet of Pro's Choice clay in 50lb bags which was left at my new field by the old groundskeeper. It is clumped and dried out, is there anything I can do to use it? (Mitch McClary)

A:

Pro Mound is a natural blue gumbo clay with no additives. Because of this it will eventually loose some moisture. Because it is a natural clay it will easily re-hydrate. Just poke holes in the bags and spray with water. Let it sit for a day and repeat as needed.

It has no additives and therefore is very durable. Once it is buried in the mound it will not dry out as fast as products with additives and will hold up much longer with less maintenance.

Q:

How deep should soil amendments be incorporated into the soil? (Kevin Harrington, Washington DC)

A:

Incorporate into at least the top 3 inches of the soil: the depth at which most of the grass roots will be found. However, for maximum benefit the thermally optimized clay can be incorporated to a depth of 6 inches, which will increase both the stability of the rootzone material and the adhesion of the turf to the ground. Below 6 inches, the benefits from adding any soil conditioner will be small.

Q:

Can clay soil conditioners improve all soils? (Scott Moore, Kansas City, Missouri)

A:

Yes, but some soils benefit more than others. Clay soils and sand soils will probably benefit the most, because they have either too many small pores (clay) or too many large pores (sand). Soil conditioners made from thermally optimized clay can increase both large pore volume and small pore volume.

Q:

What is the best method for adding soil conditioner to the soil? (Terry Day, Detroit, Michigan)

A:

The best method to incorporate any soil amendment is to blend the material off-site. This means that you scoop u the soil from your field, use a blending machine to combine the two materials, and then move the amended soil back to the field. This is very expensive and not very practical for most baseball fields.

An alternative is to gradually blend the soil conditioner into your field using a machine that is made to till the soil.
